The European Union (EU) has recently updated the EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR), introducing several important changes that will impact exporters of agricultural products, timber, and rubber to the EU market.
π Key updates:
β
Additional products have been brought under the regulation, including instant coffee and certain palm oil derivatives.
β
Small businesses will benefit from simplified administrative procedures, reducing documentation requirements by approximately 75%.
β
Companies are now allowed to fulfill compliance obligations collectively through cooperatives or industry associations.
β
The EUDR information system has been upgraded with greater automation, improving data connectivity and information sharing.
π However, the compliance standards remain as strict as ever.
The EU continues to strengthen its requirements for supply chain traceability. Products exported to the EU must:
π Demonstrate that they are not linked to deforestation occurring after 31 December 2020.
π Be traceable to the exact geographical location of the production area through GPS coordinates, digital mapping, and satellite imagery.
π Provide full transparency throughout the supply chain, from the production area to processing facilities and final export.
π» As a result, traditional procurement models involving multiple intermediaries will become increasingly difficult to align with EU requirements. Exporters should invest in:
β’ Traceability systems
β’ Digitized raw material databases
β’ Electronic documentation and ESG management
β’ Transparent supply chain monitoring and control
πΎ An opportunity for Vietnam
Vietnam has been classified by the EU as a low-risk country for deforestation, providing exporters with a competitive advantage over suppliers from many other markets.
However, low risk does not mean exemption. Businesses are still required to fully comply with EUDR requirements regarding legal sourcing, due diligence, and supply chain transparency.
EUDR is no longer simply an anti-deforestation regulation. It is rapidly becoming a new benchmark for sustainable development, supply chain traceability, and data transparency. Companies that proactively digitalize their supply chains and strengthen raw material management today will be better positioned to maintain and expand their presence in the EU market.
