♻️ Amid increasingly severe climate change, there is a devoted teacher who has spent more than 20 years working alongside the rice fields of the Mekong Delta – Master’s degree holder Lê Thanh Phong. He is the one who revived the floating-season rice – the “treasure of the floodplain” in the Mekong Delta.
🌱 Growing up in a farming family in Đồng Tháp, Mr. Phong deeply understood the hardships faced by communities living in the flood season. From that understanding, he chose a lifelong path connected to rice.
In 2011, he and his colleagues began a journey across An Giang, Đồng Tháp, Tây Ninh… to recover each handful of precious rice varieties that had nearly gone extinct.
✨ Achievements:
📌 187 floating-season rice lines collected and preserved
📌 Including Nàng Tây Đùm – a rice variety that can grow up to 5 meters following rising floodwaters, thriving entirely in harmony with nature, requiring no fertilizer – no pesticides
♻️ Not stopping there, he continued researching and cross-breeding, combining Nàng Tây Đùm Và Hương Lài to create a new variety that is both flood-adaptive and fragrant, with yields twice as high as traditional rice. This helps farmers cultivate two crops per year, significantly improving their income.
💬 Mr. Phong shared:
“Floating-season rice is not just a grain—it is a friend to the environment, preserving alluvial soil, reducing emissions, and creating sustainable livelihoods for farmers.”
📍 To date, he has transferred 13 floating-season rice varieties to cooperatives in An Giang, Đồng Tháp, Tây Ninh… paving the way for climate-resilient, nature-based agriculture.
🌾 The golden fields seen today are the “sweet fruits” of more than two decades of dedication, contributing to building a foundation for sustainable agriculture.
Amana Floating-Season Rice Company (a member of Khải Nam Group) is proud to accompany and spread these values, developing products from nature-based rice varieties – joining hands to build a sustainable agricultural future for Vietnam. 💚🌱
