🚢 What is Free Time?
“Free time” is the grace period during which the shipping line allows you to use the container without any additional charges.
🚢 When does Free Time apply?
Free time is counted on both import and export shipments:
🔹 Import: From the discharge date (when the container is unloaded from the vessel) until the empty container is returned to the carrier.
🔹 Export: From the date you pick up the empty container from the port/depot until the container is loaded on board the vessel.
⏰ Types of Free Time
🔹 DEM (Demurrage): Free time for storing the container at the terminal. After this period, demurrage charges apply.
🔹 DET (Detention): Free time for keeping the container outside the port (at private warehouse for stuffing or stripping).
📌 Practical Notes
✅ Ensure free time is confirmed in writing (on the booking note or via email).
✅ Free time can be negotiated — especially for large customers or long-haul routes.
✅ Always check free time at both POL and POD since policies vary by carrier and route.
✅ Counting includes weekends and public holidays unless the carrier states otherwise.
